#1- Blender: If you are really serious about adopting a raw food lifestyle and if there was only one piece of equipment that you could buy, it would be a blender. Investing in a high quality blender is key. Making smoothies, especially green smoothies, is known to be a staple meal and having a good quality blender that can really masticate the greens well, can make all the difference in how creamy and delicious your green smoothies taste. My personal favourite is the Vitamix. From smoothies, soups, dips, sauces and even juices, this powerhouse can do it all.
#2 - Food Processor: A food processor is great for shredding, pureeing and chopping. If you are making something that has a lot of moisture then usually a blender will do. However, if you are making something a little dryer, such as a pate, and you want some texture then using a food processor is the way to go.
A food processor can help cut the time required in the kitchen preparing a meal. My favorite is the Cuisinart. Whichever you decide to go with, make sure that you choose one that has a large cup size in case you want to produce more than one serving and/or have leftovers.
#3 - Juicer: Getting an adequate amount of greens in your diet is an important part of a raw food lifestyle. Sometimes it can be challenging to consume optimal daily amount of greens. This is when a juicer can help as it will increase the amount of greens that you can consume regularly.
Many great health benefits are also often reported when it comes to juicing, from increased energy to more radiant skin. A benefit of juicing vegetables is that the juice enters your blood stream quickly, therefore increasing the amount of vitamins, minerals and enzymes the body can absorb. For this to happen, you want to make sure that the juicer you choose does the job well.
There are many juicers on the market and my favourite is the Green Life juicer. It is pricier than other models, but worth the expense if you are serious about your health. When shopping for a juicer, the best tip I can offer is to make sure that the juicer that you purchase delivers an adequate amount of juice versus pulp. In other words, you want to make sure that you are extracting a large amount of juice and have little amount of pulp left over. Also, make sure that the juicer you choose can extract juice from greens, as the goal here is to increase your intake of greens.
#4 - Dehydrator: We all have cravings for different textures such as soft, hard, crispy or chewy. Because dehydrators are a good substitute for the common stove, you can easily make foods like raw crackers, breads, bars and cookies. There are endless delicious treats that you can create using a dehydrator. The most popular dehydrator on the market is the Excalibur.
#5 -Noodle Spiralizer: Having grown up in an Italian home where pasta making was a weekly cultural practice and my mamma’s pasta dishes were second to none (in my opinion), I must admit, from time to time, I do miss traditional pasta. However, it is nice to know that a substitute is available. A noodle spiralizer will help to transform zucchini and sweet potatos into what looks and seems like regular spaghetti. Top it off with a raw marinara sauce or my favourite pesto sauce and it can taste just as good as the real thing.
